BOSSA NOVA, FOLKLORE, AND ROCK, ALL IN ONE VOICE

EL DAVID AGUILAR

🗓️ WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 28 | 7:30 PM
📍 THE MONARCH

El David Aguilar is the kind of artist who makes a room feel smaller in the best way, and Ogden gets to find out firsthand when he plays The Monarch on October 28. Born in Culiacán, Sinaloa, and now based in Monterrey, Aguilar takes Mexican folklore, Brazilian bossa nova, ’60s folk, and ’90s rock and bends them into something that shouldn’t work together but absolutely does. His latest album, “Compita del Destino” (loosely: “Buddy of Destiny”), earned a Grammy nomination for Best Latin Rock or Alternative Album. Fourteen tracks of sun-drenched melodies, including a duet with Jorge Drexler on “Tuyo,” one of the quietest, most beautiful things either of them has recorded.

EL DAVID AGUILAR BELONGS IN OGDEN

El David Aguilar’s résumé reads like a who’s-who of Latin America’s singer-songwriter world. He’s recorded with Natalia Lafourcade on her acclaimed “Musas” albums, traded verses with Mon Laferte, and most recently appeared alongside Silvana Estrada on her NPR Tiny Desk concert, playing baritone guitar and singing backup on a set that stopped the internet for a day. He’s taught composition at Berklee College of Music. Nine Latin Grammy nominations sit next to his name, including three for Song of the Year.

TRADITION TWISTED, NOT ABANDONED

But what makes him a fit for The Monarch isn’t the credentials. It’s that he takes deep musical traditions and twists them into something personal and unpredictable. His songs pull from folklore and bossa nova and rock, but they don’t sound like any of those things in isolation. They sound like El David Aguilar. If you loved what Gabriel Royal or Maeve Gilchrist did with their roots on this same stage, Aguilar is cut from that same restless cloth.

Onstage Ogden presents El David Aguilar live at The Monarch on Wednesday, October 28 at 7:30 PM. Trae a alguien. Bring someone who’s never heard him. They’ll thank you later.
