When Aída Cuevas takes the stage in Ogden, it’s the kind of night that brings la familia together. Abuelos, parents, and niños sharing music that belongs to all of them. On Saturday, November 7, La Voz de México takes the stage at the Browning Center at Weber State University for an evening of mariachi and ranchera that spans five decades of Mexican tradition.
If you grew up hearing “El Pastor” or if “La Cigarra” still makes you close your eyes and sing along, you already know Aída Cuevas. Her voice carries las alegrías, los dolores, the quiet longings that live at the heart of Mexico’s most beloved canciones. She has been singing them since she was twelve years old, when she first appeared on live radio in Mexico City. A year later, she was performing across Europe. She hasn’t stopped since.
Over a career spanning más de cincuenta años, Cuevas has recorded over 40 albums and sold more than 11 million copies worldwide. She is the first and only female mariachi singer to win both a Grammy Award and a Latin Grammy Award, with eleven Grammy nominations to her name. Known as La Reina de la Ranchera, the Queen of Ranchera Music, her songbook albums have helped define Mexican popular music in much the same way Ella Fitzgerald’s releases defined the American standard.
But the accolades are texture, not the headline. The headline is what happens in the room when she sings. Three generations sitting side by side, sharing songs that have been passed de generación en generación. That’s what an Aída Cuevas concert does. It connects you to something bigger than yourself.
Join us Saturday, November 7 at 7:30 PM at the Browning Center at Weber State University for a night of música, tradición, and the kind of voice that reminds you why live performance matters. Whether you’ve loved Aída Cuevas your whole life or you’re about to discover her for the first time, this is an evening para compartir con los que más quieres.
